Nobody knows why the term 'Rabbit' was applied to golfers with a handicap of 16+ but we bear no resemblance to the little furry creatures. No long pointed ears, no particular love of carrots and definitely no desire to run at car headlights and end up as roadkill !
Like most golfers, we play in a competitive, friendly, sporting manner, shake hands at the end of a round and win or lose with good grace......usually over a beer or two. I joined this section, new to golf, 3 years ago with a handicap of 28 and by the end of 2011 had reduced that considerably – thanks in no small part to playing alongside and against Rabbits members both at Oakdale and at very many clubs around Yorkshire. I was welcomed into this section and, as a result, have learned to play competitively and properly a sport I enjoy and have also made many friends in the process – friends who enjoy playing, as I do, with others at the same skill level with the aim of improving.
The Rabbits Section at Oakdale is ever-changing as those who improve below 16 handicap leave us ( a classic example being Oakdale GC's 2011 Golfer of the Year ) and new members join. Our section caters for very many members who have joined in the last few years as well as many longstanding members. We cater for those whose enjoyment comes especially from competitive golf in our internal competitions, inter-club matches and Area tournaments as well as those whose enjoyment comes more from the social side of Rabbits events. Existing and new members will be made most welcome again in 2012.
The Rabbits' Section's aims are to :
•provide an environment for competitive golf for 16-28 handicap golfers;
•provide opportunities to represent the Rabbits Section in friendly matches with a range of
other prestigious clubs throughout North & West Yorkshire;
•provide opportunities to represent the Club in the Harrogate & District and Yorkshire Rabbits'
Associations' competitions, along with 100+ other clubs;
•help the 16-28 handicap player improve and enjoy their chosen sport to the full;
•uphold the traditions of both Rabbits' golf and of Oakdale Golf Club;
•give new members any help they need to take part in the full range of golfing and social
events that Oakdale Golf Club has to offer.
Come along to our Get Together on Thursday 5 April 2012 between 3pm and 5.30pm to join us for a 9 hole stableford qualifier followed by supper ( it only costs £5 to register plus competition fees ) - you'll be made very welcome; registration in the Conservatory from 3pm.
