I am profoundly grateful and touched by the great compliment afforded to me by the members of Oakdale Golf Club for inviting me to be Captain for the coming year and I express a warm welcome to members and visitors alike.

Please allow me to regale you on one of the finest courses in the North of England.

Even though we are situated only two minutes from the centre of the Spa town of Harrogate, Oakdale, established by Dr Alister MacKenzie in 1914 offers a varied challenge to all golfers and is set in a tranquil valley with an abundance of wildlife and features Oak Beck which meanders in front of the ninth and eighteenth greens.

Through the vision of immediate Past Captain Sam Mitchell we have recently created a fabulous new lounge and restaurant facility which will allow us to continue to offer a first class catering service under the guise of in-house caterer David Horbury of LeD2.

We have a vibrant social calendar for 2018 which will continue the exuberant Oakdale spirit of fun and friendship along with fine wining and dining ably supported by our established quiz, dominoes and yoga nights.

I will enjoy working with our enthusiastic Manager, James Thomas and support him in developing new ideas which will maintain Oakdale Golf Club as a major force in the Harrogate and Yorkshire Golf Unions.

We have taken the step to modernise and streamline our management structure with the appointment of a governance panel which will oversee all aspects of running the club.

We are fortunate to have resident PGA Professional Clive Dell who possesses a great knowledge and experience in golf tuition. Clive offers a large range of golfing merchandise from his on-site shop.

On the golfing front we have had a very productive and successful year with our relevant teams in the HUGC, YRGA and HARGA including individual honours for two members representing Yorkshire. The Ladies B team were successful in conquering the Yorkshire Ladies Championship.

My best wishes go to Lady Captain Shirley Needham, Rabbits Captain Mike Hughes and Junior Captain Matthew Hewson, I am sure they will all have an enjoyable and successful year in office. I must also give a special mention to Tony Robinson, now in his second year as Club President, I am sure his second year will be just as memorable as the first.

The Captains charity this year is the Cardiomyopathy Society, an independant organisation that fights the awful heart muscle wasting disease that my ten year old son Tolly succumbed to in 2010. With your support we can make a big difference!

On closing may I wish members and visitors old and new an enjoyable and successful golfing year. I am sure you will all enjoy playing golf at this club of ours.

Ken Richardson.
